Musical theater has a way of capturing hearts and transporting audiences into a world of romance, rivalry, and rousing anthems. And few productions do it better than Oklahoma!—a timeless classic making its way to the Rose Center Theater- February 21st through March 9th- with a stellar cast that promises to leave audiences spellbound. Among those bringing this beloved show to life are Alyssa Phelen and Chazz Duran, two performers with incredible talent, heart, and a passion for the stage.

Alyssa Phelen: Finding Love and Laughter on Stage
Alyssa Phelen is no stranger to musical theater, having grown up singing and dancing from an early age. “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t singing and dancing! I got my first role at the age of nine, playing one of the orphans in a production of Annie, and I haven’t wanted to stop doing musicals since then,” she shares.
For Oklahoma!, Alyssa steps into the role of Virginia—a character she humorously admits she didn't even realize had a name until cast photos were posted. “I like to think that she is the sweet but kind of dumb one of the friend group… like me!” she jokes.

One of the most defining moments in Alyssa’s theater journey was performing in Newsies—her favorite musical of all time. “A major highlight was when I was cast in Newsies and ended up meeting my future husband, who was playing Jack Kelly,” she reveals. “I mean, what theater kid didn’t want to marry Jack Kelly?”
As for Oklahoma!? The music alone is enough to make this experience unforgettable. “I absolutely love the music in this show. It’s so beautiful and full. Getting to sing those gorgeous harmonies with such an incredible cast has been an honor.”
And if she could step into any other role for one night? “It would definitely be Will Parker. He’s just so cool—he steals any scene he’s in. Of course, I’d have to learn how to do some lasso tricks first!”

Chazz Duran: A Fresh Face at the Rose Center Theater
For Chazz Duran, Oklahoma! marks his debut at the Rose Center Theater, and he’s embracing every moment. “This is my first show at the Rose Center Theater, and I have really enjoyed the experience!” he says. “I am part of the ensemble, dancing and lifting the ladies into the air.”
Chazz’s musical journey began in church, where he sang from a young age. His love for the stage grew, leading him to standout performances as Abel in Children of Eden, Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof, and Malcolm in Macbeth.
While he’s loved every moment of Oklahoma!, one of his favorite memories was auditioning. “I found it funny that during callbacks, we had to perform a double toe touch, double pirouette, double tour, and stag leap—all in about 8 counts. Trauma.”

And when it comes to his dream role for a night? He’s got a bold pick. “Ado Annie, hands down. Who doesn’t love belting out ‘I Can’t Say No?’”
Why Oklahoma! Still Resonates Today
With its sweeping melodies, heartfelt storytelling, and high-energy choreography, Oklahoma! continues to resonate with audiences of all generations. “Oklahoma! is a timeless love story,” Alyssa says. “Anyone who’s ever been in love can relate to the things these characters feel.”
Chazz echoes that sentiment, emphasizing the production’s message of unity and change. “There is still a lot to appreciate about this show, even 80 years later. What I love most are its themes of community and embracing change by accepting each other’s differences.”
As for the scene they can’t wait for audiences to experience? Both are unanimous—the crowd is going to love The Farmer and the Cowman. “The dancers are absolutely incredible, and the leads of that song are captivating,” Alyssa says. Chazz adds, “The way Aunt Eller says, ‘lemon meringue pie,’ is truly poetic.”
Why You Need to See Oklahoma! at Rose Center Theater
Alyssa sums it up best: “This cast is sensational. The leads are made for these roles, and the ensemble has some of the best vocals and most gorgeous dancing I’ve ever seen.”
